It's recently began to seem to me as though guitar playing doesn't come gradually, but rahter in large leaps. Like, whenever I practice a particurlarly hard riff/solo or a new technique, it always seems impossible for a really long time, and as though I'm getting no where with it. Then, suddenly...BANG! I have it down. Like last night. I practiced those damned "Selkies" sweeps by Between The Buried And Me for about four hours, and felt I was making no progress. Then eventually, it just came. It wasn't like "Oh, that one sounded better than the last, I'm getting somewhere..." It was more like, *sweep*..."fuck", *sweep..."FUCK", *sweep*..."FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU"... *sweep..."Hey, that sounded good...?", *sweep*..."FUCK YEAH!" Then after that, all of them sounded awesome. Does anyone else notice this, or is it just me learning weird?
Your brain needs time to digest information. Like when you study real hard you don't seem to remember until after a nights sleep. That is a big reason for sleep. Your mind runs over everything you did during the day.
Yo, I have said that to people on here and I've never seen anyone else corroborate it. Some of the best stuff I can do came to me in an instant. I remember being a teenager and having one particular thing come to me like that. I was so afraid it was temporary. I woke up the next morning and no shit rolled right off the bed onto the floor, grabbed my old Ibanez to make sure it wasn't gone and I was so happy when that one thing was still there.
