Ok I need a little advice. I'm seeing Metallica in January and they'll be playing with Machine Head and The Sword; I already know the Sword well but I (shamefully) know nothing about Machine Head...What should I pick up in the way of their albums/songs to prep so that I can be at least a half-way decent fan on short notice (since to be any kind of real fan takes years of absorption). I've already picked up Burn My Eyes, which is SICK. I obviously am going to start listening to them, but there's no way I can absorb their whole discography in a few months along with The Sword's two albums and Death Magnetic, all of which are new material. So, I'm hoping a few of you Machine Head vets out there can point me in the direction of some of their concert staples. Thanks a lot.
hey dude i just saw machinehead and metallica at joe louis in detroit. your shows probably past now too, and the sad part is machinehead didnt put on the show i was expecting. I wasnt going for metallica. ive seen them before. I was there for machinehead because their last album "the blackening" is the absolute craziest shit ive heard in a long time. its so real. but at the show they were holding back alot. at my show personally, the crowd sucked for them. robb the singer ever said a couple times you guys are pathetic. i was GA floor seats, right in front of the stage and i was going crazy trying to start a pit and stuff like the band was telling us too haha and people were looking at me like i was an idiot. it was bad man, but the problem was the same as yours. nobody knew who machinehead was, when really they have one of the best fuckin sounds around now. they probably could have showed up metallica if they had the crowd for it, and i fucking love metalica.
go buy the blackening, and listen to it in a really good really loud stereo. its an 8 song cd, but all the songs are epic. every last fucking one. its machineheads Master of Puppets if you know what i mean. The dual guitar solos the singer and lead guitarist phil pull off are insane like in Aesthetics of hate, and Halo, or the best opening song to a fucking album ever, clenching the fist of dissent. but you have to be listening loud
theres a pretty wide selection of machinehead cuz they've been around since the early 90s, but there music wasnt consistent. they went through some rap/rock phase that was pretty lame and went through a few drummers and guitarists. it wasnt until they got the new guitarist phil demmel on ashes of the empire and the blackening that they started cranking it up a notch writing wize, and it fuckin shows. here are some other songs you cant go without if your gonna start blasting machinehead
Imperium
Davidian
Ten Ton Hammer
Descend the shades of night
the burning red (live version from Hellalive will give you goosebumps)
Old (was there first big hit)
days turn blue to grey
and like i said, the blackening in its entirety, start to finish is a masterpiece. just remember. this band is a band that is supposed to be heard loud!! MACHINE FUCKIN HEAD!!!
oh and aesthetics of hate is a song written about dimebag darrell, after some douche bag wrote an article called aesthetic of hate that was saying dime got we he deserved and the music he made brought on the outcome of his life. little tid bit since i noticed you from your cowboys from hell review. nice job by the way. good writing
