Well, I'm through the first twenty episodes of Riot Band Blues, and now might be a good time for us to catch our breath and wonder what kind of beast we have on our hands.

The last several chapters have focused on Riot Band's first gig, and now with that event in the rear view mirror, it's time to change directions somewhat. I did that a bit with part 20, moving the focus abruptly from the show to Eric and his developing relationships with the other characters.

The move left some people scratching their heads and asking questions, such as "Where is this going?" and "How long will the story run?" This is a good time to ask both questions.

To answer the second question first: this story is going to be long. Very long. Both of my previous stories on U-G focused on a particular band or musician at a particular moment: Terry forming The Clutch Dogs and taking them on their first tour in Comeback Road, and Jay bringing his newbie brother Danny into the Hellakill lineup in Guitargasm.

In RBB, I wanted to do something bigger, something that would follow a band all the way from start to finish, regardless of length. So twenty chapters and 40,000 words in, we're still just getting warmed up. Remember, by this time both previous stories were more than half finished(both were about 65,000 words long). And Riot Band has just finished its first gig, in a house party basement. And it's a long way to the top if you wanna rock and roll.

As for where it's going, there will be more explanation of that in the next chapter. It will be rock-heavy, but it will also be drama-heavy. As anyone who has ever been in a real band knows, the hardest part about being in a band is not learning the songs or getting gigs. The hardest part is keeping the frickin' band together.

Well, Riot Band Blues is going to have all three: learning songs, getting gigs, and struggling to keep the band together. And if it's not your cup of tea, that's cool. But I'm hoping it comes together.

As the creepy voice at the beginning of that Strapping Young Lad song says: "We had a great deal invested in this project and we can't allow it to fail."

Keep working on your fourths and fifths,

Nolan.

I definatly want RRB to be longer then the others. IMO you could keep writing this and never finish it, and I would still read it every week. Ive been reading since chapter 1 of comeback and it's nice to see a writer progress. So keep up the good work Nolan
