Songwriting...

It's a frustrating thing. I have a pretty good idea of how I want my music to sound now, but... It's so difficult writing chord progressions and riffs that don't sound "borrowed" or are just the standard "I-IV-V-I-IV-V"...

Writing lyrics has never been difficult for me, but I hear of people regularly hitting a lyricist's wall- but they can write some good progressions. Being part of a band really helps with that problem, because you can collaborate, but geez, for the one-man-band people... It's either the burning ship or the freezing ocean.

the limits of the guitar is what makes it so unique and beautiful!
It is almost impossible to to get something new. But think about the blues for a minute! The use only one progression all the time I IV V and it always sounds fresh and exciting. Just play what you feel and that will be what it is suppose to be.
Let the music tell you.
ROCK ON.

Haha, nothing wrong with ye olde I IV V progression. It's in the melody that you should be focusing on.

If you really want to write a nice sounding (and original) progession, try using this different predominants and different dominant chord substitutions.

As a artist learns to draw, he copy's the master first to learn the fundamentals.
