First Major Gig

We played at a coffee house once upon a time ago and we did decent. We were doing Primus stuff and I only knew one of the three songs we were playing so I somehow managed to improv. them.

The teacher that organizes the assemblies was there and she liked what we did. She approached us after the coffee house and asked us if we'd like to play in an assembly. Naturally we said yes, and so commenced our preparations.

Approximately 1300 people watched this assembly.

We did not practice till the week of the assembly but we had 3 jam sessions of about 3 hours each where we would play the song over and over again till we had it. Eventually we got it down.

Then comes the show. Gabe, and I arrived early to unload his drum set (as he has a lot of pieces). We spent a while setting it up then we waited for the other band members.

They eventually got there and we silently ran though the song once or twice. We were instructed to get up on stage quickly and off quickly as they were running late. So I brought my amp up and must have tried 3 plug-in's before I found one with power. Once again we had trouble to get the mic's working. Then we started our song.

It starts out with Gabes bass drum thudding a steady, powerful beat. Then I come in on guitar playing a distorted barre chord. Then Matt and Mike come in on the bass and Mike begins to sing. Then we plow through the next parts until the solo.

We had practiced it for my solo to start right after Mike gave me a vocal cue but us being nervous, he forgot to give it and I forgot about it. I quickly realized something was wrong and looked over. They were looking at me and I realized what I had missed so the very next bar I did the solo.

That solo was done with surprising accuracy. Then it went into the bass solo, which Matt nailed. Then came Gabes drum solo that we decided he should have (which was probably my favorite part of the song). Then we repeated the starting and it was over.

Everybody started to cheer and clap for us, which was surprising because people don't generally get Primus. I feel nobody really liked us but I got a lot of compliments walking through the hallways for the next few days.

Umm... As a moral for this story, always have someone in the crowd that can come turn your amp up if its to low.

And if anybody cares to watch the video of this performance you can watch it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLJyivugi64

*Story may be more dramatic than actual event*
