So, last wednesday, I saw the Progressive Nation 2008 tour at Terminal 5 in NY. Here's my review:
Three/3: The biggest surprise I've ever gotten. They were AMAZING, the guitarist/singer uses some weird slap/flamenco hybrid, and he fingerpicks shred solos! They've also got a keyboardist who doubles as a secondary drummer, and the two dueled in the middle of the set. 8/10.
Between the Buried and Me: Not much to say, basically an Opeth rip-off with a bit more harmonic minor and more hardcore vocals. 5/10.
Opeth: Amazing. A fairly good light show, especially for an opener, and the between-song banter was HILARIOUS. My only gripe was that they didn't delve into Orchid or Morningrise. 9/10.
The setlist: Master's Apprentice, The Baying of the Hounds, To Rid the Disease, Heir Apparent (Watershed song!), and Wreath.
Dream Theater: The best show I've ever seen. The playing was spectacular and spot on, the vocals were perfect (Honestly, I know he's shaky on some live recordings, but everything sounded studio quality), and the stage show was magnificent. Some of the highlights were: Dueling guitar and keytar solos, a half hour drum solo that culminated in EVERY DRUMMER on the tour coming up and playing on Portnoy's kit SIMULTANEOUSLY, a cartoon to accompany the Dark Eternal Night of all the members battling a werewolf, a Metropolis/Learning to Live medley, and The Dark Nintendo Night. The set was a little biased towards the newer stuff, but the show more than made up for it. 10/10.
The setlist: Constant Motion, Panic Attack, Through My Words/Fatal Tragedy, Dark Eternal night, As I Am, The Ministry of Lost Souls, and Metropolis/Learning To Live.
