Skippy was the man. The Derek Trucks Band has a great cover of Crow Jane on their album Songlines.

If you're digging into Skip, try some Blind Willie McTell (though not all that similar) and some Mance Lipscomb (though not all that similar). They're stylistically different, but have similar feel to their sound.
