I don't remember where I found this quote, but I think it is very wise and sums up the importance of learning the fundamentals of music and the different levels one goes through until they attain mastery.

That sounds like an oversimplification of the Johari Window; that Unconscious Incompetent/Conscious Incompetent/Conscious Competent/Unconscious Competent.
Good rephrasing though, makes it a little more... human sounding...
