Line 6 POD xt: Abusing the "Drive" setting - avoid

So I was browsing customtone.com for a good "Black Album" setting for my POD xt. Almost all the patches I tried out had the "Drive" set to 10 and "Mid" set to 0-2. First of all, you do not need the "Drive" to be on full to get a good Metal tone! And the "Mids" is what fills out the empty parts of your patch!

When I'm trying to get a good Metal tone, I choose a high gain amp (with a nice cab of course) and set the Treble and Bass to about 2 o'clock, Mid at 12 o'clock, and Drive at 0. I then palm mute 8th notes on my low E string, and slowly adjust my Drive. When your guitar starts to sound too "static" or "electronicy", I stop adjusting the Drive. Did I make it all the way to 10? No. In this case, I only adjusted the Drive to 6, or 1 o'clock. After this, my guitar STILL isn't distorted enough, so I add a digital screamer. I set the Drive on the screamer low, but instead turn up the Gain until my guitar sounds too electronic. After tweaking the Treble and Bass, I then tweak the Mids, add a bit of chorus, turn the gate on ect.

If your planning on double tracking, I reccomend having one treble heavy patch, and one bass heavy patch. Then pan one tone to the left, and the other to the right.

If you are still unhappy with your tone scratch it, and try new amps and cabs combinations! Try not to turn to customtone.com if your looking for a good metal tone ;)
