It's played in that tuning because there are a lot of open strings used, F major doesn't really work in standard if you want open strings, listen closely to the recording. Like I said, its most likely a capo on the first fret rather than the guitar actually being tuned up half a step, but I'm 100% that's how its played. Without tuning up/capoing it is a little tough to get the hammer ons with the clean guitar part going anyway.
