Isn't it funny..

...one can be completely sure and solid about something, then one thing/person can come along and change that completely. For example, a year or two ago i was guitar center looking to get a new guitar because i really fooking needed one, and i was looking at this really nice used jackson dinky. Neck was fantastic, had a diverse array of sounds, and was equipped with a gotoh made wilkinson trem. A salesman came by and asked me what styles i play. After i described to him my playing style he said "oh you don't want this jackson, you should get something like a strat or a telecaster". I ended up walking out with a standard hss strat (the same thing as the jackson minus the nice top, wilkinson, & playability) which i affixed locking tuners to. it sounded okay, and played pretty nicely but it just wasn't what i was looking for in a guitar. I eventually got a tele, it too was a good sounding and playing guitar, but not what i was looking for in a guitar. I no longer own those guitars and recently bought a new one; the new one being the very same jackson i had my eyes on earlier. I knew what guitar was right for me by feel and tone, but i let a salesman trick me out of a lot of money and cause me months of dissatisfaction. In fact, in the time i had the strat, i almost never played it because i liked the sound and feel of a les paul copy i bought for $25 better. Moral of the story, dont let someone TELL you what guitar or amp or effect is best for you. Suggestions are nice and some of the time they are helpful at narrowing down your choices if you have no idea, but if you've got that magic guitar in your hands, or that sweet amp in front of you, don't let someone dissuade you. To be even more corny, if you're got a idea or a dream and you know in your mind you're going to achieve it, don't let someone take it away from you

What say you?

Current mood: recalcitrant

I was thinking about how joe satriani is suing coldplay over similarities between Viva La Vida and If I could fly and i arrived at this question...unless another artists song is a complete rip of someone else's work (and i mean complete, like if i took Stairway To Heaven and changed a few lyrics), can you really sue for similarities? i always hear and believe that nothing in music is really new, just the way that it is presented changes. If someone was to copyright a particular set of notes, or a phrase, or a chord progression and no one else could use the bit without permission, wouldn't music as a whole die? what do you guys think?

p.s. extreme respect goes out to both joe satriani and coldplay (but more to satch )
