Favorite bands :
The way I see it, you cant palm off an entire genre on the basis of the songs you heard, simply because you havent heard every song in said genre. thus, keep an open mind bitch. you never know, you mind find a really bangin polka tune which has you shocking out to the funky accordians...or something. what im getting at is that you can hate a Band, or a song or generally have found that you dislike a genre...but cant categorically say you hate it. rock on, and accept other people...its all music aint it?
despite this, Punk (and its many Bastard offspring) take presidence in my Cd player....ok, my illegally downloaded MP3 collection.
Top of the pile being -
Emo. you cant beat a good bit of Emo, with its harsh dynamics, twinkly guitars and borderline suicidal frontmen (i would say or women, but im a chauvenist pig. oink oink). now understand however im not talking watered down, dashboard confessional/taking back sunday, truly pussy, i have ovaries and a womb and write all my songs about girlfriends i havent had emo, oh no no no. Im talking bout the old stuff, when it had just sprung from the loins of the DC hardcore scene.
And top of this pile within a pile would have to be -
At the Drive-In - Greatest band ever...bar none...ever just listen to them. anything i would say couldnt possibly do them enough justice. Im having Initiation Played at my funeral...if the cheque i got from satan bounces that is.
Fugazi - eeey, now heres a band that broke some moulds. angry punky shoutalots with an added dimension of catchyness.
Rites of Spring - Just goes to show how much emos evolved over the years. arguably the first emo band. check out End on End. its chaotic, its short, it may make ears bleed (and im not talking a little bit, im talking gushes of blood) but by god...its brilliant.
Cap'n Jazz - its shamlessly pathetic sounding, and the singer really cant hold a note, but you know its supposed to sound that way and you just cant help but smile and make a contented 'aaah' noise when you hear it.
Sunny day Real Estate - sparce, yet deep and intimate genius, or sparce arty, concieted bollocks......well, it depends on what album you get, but they are a good old band you know. And the Bassist is in foo Fighters now.
HIP - HOP
you cant beat a good bit of hip hop. And i am proud to say the UK scene is coming on leaps and bounds (no thanks to my lazy producin' ass). It sounds eastcoast (the best kind of coast) and oldschool (the best kind of school). It has the oppurtunity to be something huge, with raw beats intelligent vocals and and a real average joe attachment. Im not drenched in bling, im not swimming in bitches and i certainly aint rollin on 22's, so thank fuck the UK is providing hip hop that i can at least kind of relate to and comfortably listen to without feeling like a bit of a cultural pirate (aarrrrrrrrr!!!)
Keep an eye out for:
Klashnekoff (and Terra Firma)
Jehst
Braintax
Pyrelli
Sway
skinnyman
Task Force
Roots Manuva
Blade
Mr Scruff etc.
and from across the pond, i like:
The old standards, dre, 2pac, Biggy etc, etc yawn, yawn... yawn, but aside from these obvious doyens of the rap game, i reccomend the following:
MF Doom (seriously, one of the best rappers alive today)
Cloudddead (and all of the anticon collective)
Sage Francis
Aesop Rock
Wu-tang (i know someone who thinks Wu-tang are shit...i spose thats fair enough, he has an opinion, but he also says that Dip Set are better than the tang...which is just so fundamentally wrong)
I've been saying for AAAAGGES that Dangermouse was going to blow up, and finally he has. and to think, you all said i was just crazy, WELL IM LAUGHING NOW!!!! HAHAHAHA!!
KRS-One. nothing to say. just shutup and listen to him
Rakim smashes it
De la Soul, Roots,
Generally im an eastcost head. i like the raw beats, and the grimy feel to it.
for the most part Hip Hop Has lumbered, fractured and immatured. It needs a new messiah. There are a few shining lights puncturing the gray, blandness and mediocrity that for the most part pollutes the airwaves, but these are a dying breed. Rise up rappers, producers, DJ's and beatboxers and bitchslap pop-hop back into the fetid, pus filled, tar-black womb of satan from whence it caaaaaaaame!!!
sorry about that, some things just make me...so...angry
Favorite guitarists :
Omar Rodriguez, Jim Ward, Davey Von Bohlen, Hendrix, Buckethead, Ian Mackaye, Spencer Seim
Favorite bassists :
Eric Wilson, Pastorius, Joe Lally, Brian Gibson
Favorite books :
Read Hunter S. Thompson books or die...im not kidding the pages can cure all known diseases when ground into a fine paste using just a little bit of water. no, i was kidding. just read them for insight into how to trash hotel rooms, build obscene drug collections, drink rum, get roughed up by disgruntled hells angels and generally be a cool (albiet eccentric and slightly sociopathic) MoFo. Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas, Hells Angels and The Rum Diary.
- Also read American Psycho by brett easton ellis. I believe this book should be included in the curriculum. it would teach kids such great lessons like how fun it is to stab whores, gays and the homeless in the eyes, that a starving rat can re-enact the gutbusting dinner scene from alien, and that rich people can commit grisly murder after grisly murder and get away with it. or you could just read it to discover what a truly headfucked person Brett Easton Ellis is (and he was so young...). nice twist at the end too, but i shan't be revealing that now will I.....
- Also read the doors of perception or the food of the gods by aldous huxley and terrence mckenna respectively so you dont die ignorant to some pretty kickass fauna/fungi.
- Also read, The Electric Kool-aid acid test by Tom Wolfe, and chuckle lightheartedly at the burnt out hippies, ambling across the country attempting to Freak people out, spiking drinks with powerful hallucinogens...and (rather idiotically/tenuousl y/brilliantly(delete to your tastes) comparing life to a writes bureau.
- Also read Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut because its about time travel, is probably short enough for a longish train journey.
- Also Read The Da Vinci Code, but dont tell me what happens, cos i dont give a flying fuck
Favorite tv :
I believe TV is the Devil.
ex cept for House.
I believe House is God
Favorite movies :
Oldboy, Porco Rosso, Donnie Darko, Pulp Fiction, Sin City, Requiem for a dream, The Big Lebowski, Life of Brian.......this list could potentially be overwhelmingly huge so im gonna stop typing....now
I love music, films and sleeping in that order. they make me tick. the music produces a rhythmic tick, the film a more suspensful tick and the sleeping harbours a far more biological tick, which is not without its charms.
I enjoy looking for the irony in things. Im an ironyspotter. its like trainspotting, except slightly more smug, and infinately more cynical.
I am god of a small Island in the south pacific. its not much but its a start. jesus started in some shithole in bethlehem and look how successful he is now.
i indirectly fund terrorism through certain lifestyle choices...i'll say no more...because i cant remember...what...th ey...are........
