I did it on my laptop. Heheh. Guitar was plugged into the audio card in the laptop. After that I use Amplitube 3 for setting the guitar tones. For the drums, I use Addictive Drums software and I used FL Studio for bass, effects and mixing .. cos FL Studio works on the laptop. It isn't powerful enough to run more sophisticated softwares like Cakewalk or Sonor.

There's a few factors that can affect the sound of a cab, other than the speakers:

Cab dimensions
Quality and type of wood
Insulation
Hardware
Sealing of the wood on the inside
Front vs. Rear loaded
Angled vs. Straight baffle board (straight cabs project straight, angled project straight and slightly upwards for a fuller sound)
Wood joints (construction)
etc.
