You're now chatting with a random stranger. Say hi!
A word of advice: "asl" is boring. Please find something more interesting to talk about!
Stranger: Recreaton is upon us
You: HAIL SATAN
Stranger: No
Stranger: There is no Satan
You: I would actually agree, are you perchance atheist?
Stranger: No, i'd call myself more agnostic.
You: I personally find agnostics to be atheists as well, as in my opinion 'not suspending judgement' is also not believing, therefore being 'without god' as is an atheist...but you may call yourself what you want :)
Stranger: Thank you
Stranger: But i always found atheism to be more certain with themselves
Stranger: that there is absolutely nothing
Stranger: I at least think something goes on
You: I believe it was Richard Dawkins who made a scale of 'believing', from 1 to 5.
You: 1 was certainty that God existed, five was certainty he didn't exist.
You: and of course 3 was complete agnosticism, impartiality to the highest degree
Stranger: Hmm...
Stranger: I guess I don't really know where i'd put myself on there.
Stranger: Would you say you're a 5?
You: Of course, from what you're talking about, you don't really seem to believe in a deity so much as more supernatural activities.
You: And yes, I'm as sure as I can be :)
Stranger: Alright
Stranger: And you're right
Stranger: I don't think there is one singular god conducting things
Stranger: But I think we have souls.
Stranger: At least I hope we do.
You: I can see why one would hope that we would have souls. I myself sometimes long for such a thing, when friends and family members pass away, for example. But I also reach the conclusion that such a thing is irrational and ungrounded.
Stranger: I know so many people feel that way, i can understand how they would.
Stranger: But I'm willing to believe that some things can't be explained away by logic and rationality.
You: Oh, I believe so too...but so far, these things CAN be explained away by logic and rationality. History has shown many such things that have seen at first nonsensical to science's eyes, and later proven to be fact, but so far, souls/religiousviews/deities are all easily debunked by scientific, logical theory.
Stranger: Feelings aren't logical, however.
Stranger: Thats what faith is, pretty much.
Stranger: And thats what I've always found important
You: I've found that there are different kinds of faith. There is faith that is present for no good reason, completely irrationally (often religion falls into these views), and there is faith based on previous expreriences that would give one a good reason to 'have faith' in something.
Stranger: I think i may fall into the "no good reason" category hahaha. I'm just very hopeful.
Stranger: Out of curiosity, what do you believe happens when we die?
Stranger: Its just nothing?
You: I believe that once die, our nerve structure and body functions cease to work, and we rot in the ground, or wherever we are laid to rest. I think that as our brains cease to work, all thoughts cease. It's over, there is no thought or body function.
Stranger: I suppose thats another reason for faith; fear.
Stranger: who the hell looks forward to that
Stranger: at least heaven's cushy and full of singing or something.
Stranger: So i get that angle
You: Of course, and one of the things I don't like about faith is that it's often a moral excuse. I'd personally rather live life to the fullest, not that it's a 'tutorial' for a better, more important 'afterlife.' I understand why someone would like to see death as a new beginning, but I also see what's wrong with thinking like that.
Stranger: I'll be sure to let you know whats up when i croak.
Stranger: Nice talking to you.
Your conversational partner has disconnected.

I'm an agnostic. And I think that if you want, you can think of god as a science yet to be explained.
