WishfulShredder wrote on Dec 28th, 2010 1:22pmWell, regarding free software, I honestly have no Idea, since I pirate everything and anything. If you want some free VSTs though I would recommend scrounging about here: http://www.musicradar.com/tech I know they used to have a roundup of the best free synth plugins but I can't find the article (although they have about 50 "best free software of the week" articles).
Pirate-wise, I can recommend Albino 3- amazing synth, but it is quite difficult to program and the presets are shite, and Toxic Biohazard, which isn't particularly well known unless you use FL studio- great synth IMO, has awesome presets to base your sounds off. Also, everything (inc. Drums) in the DAW Reason is amazing, but it can't record live instruments (unless you get its partner program Record).
Drumwise, I like EZdrummer by toontrack and the genre specific expansions they offer, although I'm told superior drummer is much superior- but is 20gb+ - annoying as hell to download... quote |

Eastwinna wrote on Aug 1st, 2010 4:22am
Long ago, before pianos and guitars were common, most music was sung and not played on an instrument. Having only one person singing got boring a long time ago, so they had multiple people singing multiple melodies. When two people sung a different note at the same time, chords were invented. Eventually, you had singers singing one chord to another.
This is voiceleading. You view each note of a chord as in its own melody. It's called voiceleading because its origins lie in singing music.
When it's done properly (each voice sounds separate, a strong harmony is implied, a relatively good balance of dissonance and consonance) it's usually called "counterpoint." Counterpoint is essential in good voiceleading, but not necessarily essential in good music.
quote |

posting this hear so I don't lose it. it's a simple example of a song in a major key that sounds sad, imo. also, a suspended diminished chord. |
Nice but that isnt a Ab7sus 2, its a Em chord, a simple 2 5 1 in D
