So I bought a slide

Been learning Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ Top recently - I'd heard it on the radio and thought I'd have a go. I had most of it down and thought I could manage a version of the slide solo using a finger. Nope.

Took a trip to a local store and bought a Stagg slide pack. This a two slide pack, one full size, one half size. They look like chrome-plated steel. Here's an Amazon picture:

Got them home and started. I'd no idea how fun these would be to use! Worked out some of the solo, spent ages just playing around with the slide.

Great fun.

Missed concert

Current mood: disappointed

Kings Of Leon, I'm not their biggest fan but was looking forward to it. Now due to personal circumstance I've missed it.

Vox Amplug Joe Satriani model

Current mood: happy

So, due to noise constraints at home I have to use headphones when I practise (which is seldomly at the moment).

I had a look at the various Amplugs on offer from Vox and listened to the demos on Youtube. I've decided on the Satriani signature model which has arrived today from Amazon.

Once I have a few runs with it I'll update!

Had time to play through this now. I'm playing my Schecter C1 through it and it's not bad at all. I'm using Sennheiser closed back headphones with it so I've found that turning the volume up beyond halfway on the Vox is loud. Past halfway is unbearably loud for me.

It has Volume, Tone and Gain dials. The Tone actually does affect the sound, rolling off the treble gives a bit of a mellower tone. Gain goes from clean through crunchy; it doesn't go into crazy overdrive territory, so if you buy this looking for hard rock or metal it won't deliver. Clean isn't crystal clean; it's sounds a bit bluesy clean, a tiny bit dirty when guitar volume is at 10. Rolling it down cleans it up but it's not Fender clean. Turning the Gain to around three quarters or so I got some nice Slash-type tones - not exact duplicate but similar. With a bit of volume control on the guitar I expect it'd give AC/DC and Thin Lizzy type tones.

The Delay feature is nice. It's fixed, i.e. on or off at around 500ms (I haven't accurately timed it). Depending on how loud the guitar volume pot is it will cycle around five time on a single note, gradually fading off.

One bad thing I've found with it is (may just be my amplug) is it has a bit of hiss when not playing guitar. I found it when I rolled the Gain up to around halfway, with volume around halfway. It's not loud but it could be annoying between playing. It's not audible when you play notes so isn't bothering me. I have found all solid state amps I've played through with headphones have had this background hiss - perhaps I've just been unfortunate.

It has a line-in which I've not tried yet. It's a 3.5mm jack socket so I'm going to plug in my MP3 player with backing track to practice over. I noticed when I plugged in the MP3 player using a 10cm jack to jack lead that I got an increase in the hiss; it may be my lead, I don't have another yet to swap it. As soon as I unplugged the lead the hiss went back to it's normal level.

No comment on battery life yet as I've only played it an hour.

New Overdrive

Current mood: happy

My Danelectro Cool Cat V2 drive arrived today. Not gonna have time to test this out for a few weeks, but am looking forward to it. Sounded really good on the Youtube clips I've heard. For 30 I don't think I'll be disappointed.

Pedal Board

So now I've got three pedals, plus the Blackstar footswitch it's becoming an untidy mess of cables when I play. So I've decided to get a pedal board. I think I'll go for one of the pedal cases, which doubles as a board but offers protection when I put stuff away.

Looking at Stagg cases at the moment as they are cheap.

Twilight books

Yeah, so finished all these books. These could almost be really interesting if they got rid of the whole love story - I know this will cut it from four books to one. For example, the whole werewolf (I'm not going into stuff from the book in case it's a spoiler) plot could have been expanded, and there's certainly a fair bit of back story there.

The vampires themselves (not the boring Cullens) have the potential to be far more interesting, the hints are there in the final book.

Overall, not worth reading unless you got the books for free and have nothing better to do.

Pedals n Books

Current mood: pleased

So the Reverb and Chorus pedals arrived last week. Spent some time playing with these individually and in combination with other pedals.

Quick impressions are....
Reverb: It's digital but the effects are excellent. My favourite at the moment is the Spring, with Level at 2oclock and Depth and Speed at noon. Sounds just like that song at the start of Pulp Fiction...the name of which escapes at present. Think it's Mirasulu or similar. Anyway, the other settings are good too. The Hall setting at max depth and speed reverbs for ages, and multiple notes overlay and collide with each other in a manner which I think is pretty realistic. It's a pretty impressive pedal.

Chorus: Again a digital chorus but very well done. It ranges from the very vintage sounding to modern tight chorus effects. Being I don't know tons of songs with chorus effects I'm currently messing with it and playing Come As You Are. It manages this no probs. There's a setting on it named Multi which sounded impressive on the ProGuitarShop demos, but not so much when I try it. Might be down to my amp, but more likely my EQing.

Decided to read these Twilight novels now...never thought I would but I figured I should find out what the fuss is about. Having watched The Vampire Diaries on TV, the book really reminds me of it. Not made up my mind on it yet but doubt it will take long to finish as there seems to be no real depth to the characters yet. Maybe it'll get better... all the females I know seem think it does.

Why doesn't Firefox spell-checker know what reverb is?!
