A few semesters ago, I came across something that I probably I would have never
came across if it weren't for some brave girl in my speech class who gave a really
touching speech on suicide. The speech was a really eye-opening event for me because,
for one, it was a personal message to our class that suicide is a major issue in
our society and more importantly, that suicide is preventable. Well…basically
her speech began with a hypothetical visualization of ourselves on the ground vomiting
and convulsing as medics try to rescue us from an intentional drug-overdose and
to cut the story short, it ended with another visualization of ourselves at our
funerals. It was an incredible introduction and it really caught the attention of
the entire class. Her speech was an informative speech so the rest the speech
was loaded with the statistical aspects of the issue and then she broke it down
to some things that we can do to personally prevent suicide by giving us some
signs that may help us identify a person maybe thinking of suicide. Well her
message was clear—suicide is a major issue in our society; however, it can be
prevented if we can become more aware and understanding of the issue. Well,
after I decided to do some of my own research and I came across a website
entitled “To Write Love on Her Arms.” At first, I was a little skeptical about
what site was all about but after reading Jamie’s “The Story”, I finally
understood what this was all about. To Write on Her Arms is a mission; it’s
vision of helping others and informing others of the terrible things that we may
be unaware of—self infliction, suicide, depression; and the list goes on and on.
Although, I personally have never dealt with or know of anyone personally who
has dealt with these issues, I find it to be a very pertinent and humanitarian
cause that Jamie has set out to accomplish. The movement known as “To Write On
Her Arms” is more than something that we see “cool” bands wearing at their
shows, it’s a message; and that the message is clear: “Rescue is possible…” <a href="http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vbXlzcGFj ZS5jb20vdG93cml0ZWxvdmVvbmhlcmFybXM="><img src="http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/8555/wakeu pfinalma2.gif" border="0" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us" /></a>
