Well, my first experience at music was in the school Orchestra on the upright bass about three years ago. There, I learned to read standard notation, basic theory, and that sort of thing. A couple years ago, I saw a Slayer concert with my dad and form that point on, was turned on metal and rock. So I decided I would learn to play bass guitar and saved up for a cheap one and a practice amp. After about six months, I was able to buy a second-hand Epiphone Thunderbird (I know, I could have done better) and a off-brand combo and started playing. I got the hang of the bass guitar pretty quickly, it's similar enough to the upright. I then met a couple of guitarist friends and we decided to start a band, just for fun. It never really panned out, and we became more jamming partners than an actual band. I've also picked up a bit of guitar and violin. I like experimental bass playing that still holds the song together (ala Steve Harris, John Myung) and guitar-like bass solos (Cliff Burton, Thunderfingers) and generally eschew root-note pounding, and only will do it if I'm covering a song or it's necesarry for the song. I've started to get into some progressive and technical metal as of late.
