some success occurred, problem is it happened when i was messing around. volume was like at the 2oclock position, gain maxed, and something squeeled lol
too bad i can't play clean at all at those volumes hehe
I hit the high E string, mute it, and my guitar is still making noise until i mute my A string.

hmm no video making stuff here. i think it sounds as if I am really frustrated(frustrated yes, well lower on the scale, just irritated) but i am OK with the situation and willing to keep trying. not killing myself over it, but your concern and willingness to help is very appreciated! i probably will keep youtubing various videos to see if someone has a different suggestion/technique and keep trying till i get it though.
thanks!

dunno if your already doing that - but if not that could be the issue |
i tried various angles but not sure if i can find a sweet spot. It seems i am on the extreme edge of things, either hitting a string without touching or touching the string too much to get a "plunk" sound.

iampeter wrote on Sep 9th, 2009 10:19pmthanks for reading and the suggestions!
I actually have tried that and i am still not sure where the problem is occuring. I am using the 4th fret on the on the G or B string as a test for part of a song i was trying the pinch harmonic on. The youtube videos i have watched tells me what it should sound like, but reproducing it hasn't worked. I tried moving the picking area towards the neck and back towards the tail to see if theres a hotspot but still no luck. i saw the pinch harmonics beginners ideas(to make it as easy as possible tips), just bad technique i guess
I am not sure if i can get the touch any more delicate then it already is lol I can't even add vibrato cause its either a very short "plunk" or "tink" or it sounds as if i just played the note normally. I think i have come close, but the sound was way off still. quote |

MickAlmighty wrote on Aug 19th, 2009 11:43pmhey dude, really gutted to of missed the show.
how did it go? what did you play etc? quote |
iampeter wrote on Aug 18th, 2009 11:17pmman, i hear everything when i play with my amp and it sounded awful when i kept the volume high. thats what contributed to my word practice blog post. Every time i just glanced at a string, i would hit the note and i didn't know(still dont). today im going to try play louder to see if that was the cause and also check if i get fret buzz thats picked up by my amp. I saw a thread on the forums about a guy just wanting to play unplugged while he learned, and this same exact issue poped in my head becuase how does one know if they are playing correctly when i can barely hear my low strings when i play unplugged lol that guy sorta irritates me with his threads though! i dont know why. quote |
iampeter wrote on Aug 18th, 2009 6:13amoh yea, i wanted to ask, what did you discover that made you redo 6months of practice/habits? Gotta be pretty big to do something like that. I was thinking like you only down picked and forced yourself to do alternate picking quote |
iampeter wrote on Aug 18th, 2009 12:48ami saw on the forum you moved for college, did it go well? i assume its either just cool or normal if you got time to post on UG and read my blog! thanks for the comments
I think thats one thing life gave me, analysis/problem solving. If armed with the background knowledge, i can triage anything! I always wondered if i could do police dispatch
did you decide to buy a guitar or ship one with you? sounded stressful to ship it :\ quote |
iampeter wrote on Aug 16th, 2009 3:02amCobenBlack wrote on Aug 15th, 2009 at 4:36pm : i always ended up going back to a lower gain setting. i think they usually describe it as a crunchy rock tone - more rock than metal if you get my drift.
as always though - good look finding what your looking for |
good news! had a much better day playing today, amp gain/volume settings are much nicer at around the 11o clock position! unfortunately, I started getting irritated at my neck buzz(not picked up by amp though) and took a look at my truss rod. The used guitar i got looked like someone went pretty rough at the truss rod and the HEX adjuster, lets just say, no longer has any actual sides
I asked on the forums to see if a 8mm pipe wrench would still work(uses 4mm allen wrench). i couldn't find a 8mm that had thin enough sides to slide into the neck so i can't test it yet.

iampeter wrote on Aug 15th, 2009 10:23pmthanks for the suggestion, i dont have any definate settings, but i have been tuning down at the tone/volume at the guitar side. I think maybe its not that I am making a bad sound, its what I percieve as a bad sound. I am leaning towards maybe low gain type of settings. Distortion is something I may dislike, but its still gotta have a rock tone. I have been reading up a bit on definitions and how to describe various tones, but there are a lot of X sound likes X artist(that i never heard of) so its making progress slow. I am still going to experiment a lot with the micro cube though, I think I have had my gain on too high and volume too low to get the sound that I want. I do like delay though, gives me the sustain that i dont have quote |
iampeter wrote on Aug 9th, 2009 10:57amI hope you finished your guitar and had a great time playing at the show with it! quote |
MickAlmighty wrote on Aug 6th, 2009 1:14amaww that sucks, ive got very VERY little money like i said.
thats shite, looks like ive godda give it a miss then quote |
MickAlmighty wrote on Aug 5th, 2009 11:13pmaye, aye.
i might be able to get down through the day at some point.
how much is entry? quote |
iampeter wrote on Aug 4th, 2009 2:57amthe way I was watching (www.justinguitar.com) instructed the use of the pointer finger to do the muting, which i assume is a normal way. I havent tried experimenting too much with other ways to mute the strings. The idea where you mentioned to use the pad of my finger was something I tried, but to hold it that lightly gave me insecurity, as of now, i am very used to getting a good hold on the neck to feel my way around. I want to try the thumb idea though, gotta make sure that one participates too!
in Symphony of Destruction, the tab said open E for the root, and 2/2 for string A and D, so I haven't read anywhere to mute the strings. I was really busy at work so I couldn't research these ideas enough though.
Thanks for your suggestions! quote |
MickAlmighty wrote on Aug 4th, 2009 12:18amkinda pissed off now, doesnt look like im gonna be able to make it!!! GGRRR!!
i have like, NO money, and any money i DO get in (my birthdays on friday, woop woop) looks to be going towards paying for me to go to the isle of white with my gf at the end of august quote |
iampeter wrote on Aug 4th, 2009 12:08amlol, I was thinking it was as simple as that, but when i played the note, I was concerned that how do i mute strings if there are no strings to be held. I think i left that part on the blog, i compose them inbetween my tech calls at work. I am still looking for concrete information on muting strings or not(so far only 1 place had suggested you mute the strings) but then i haven't had the time to really research it yet.
thanks for the comment! quote |
