GHJ wrote on Sep 20th, 2009 4:43pmHey man,
Homage to Catalonia and DaOiLaP are both autobiographical, I found them both pretty interesting, but then again I do enjoy biographies. I found Homage to Catalonia more interesting, mainly because of the political backdrop which I knew little about before I started reading it.
DaOiLaP I found to be a little bit repetitive at points, though still a good read. The book just details his experience of unemployment/worthless underpaid jobs and a bit of tramping about with the homeless. Its a bit more of an illustration of an oft ignored social group which tend to be ignored in history. Whereas Homage to Catalonia is much more poltical, and provides a backdrop to Orwells left wing politics.
Hope my confused explanation helps a bit. quote |

Easy mate, are you doing English at St John? I'm kinda planning on going there, just be interested to know how you find it there. |
Yep, English Literature to be precise.
The course is great, the tutors are fantastic too.
The place is nice, although it's tiny compared to every other university I've ever been to. The city isn't bad (I hate it but I've lived here for years and years, and I'm not really much of a Northener) and most people really enjoy it here. Transport links are good and everything is reasonably cheap.
I'd definitely check it out and consider it.
Hope this helped

No I didn't know, that's ace though!! Twas a good cover!! I don't think Scout Halls are designed for gigs to be honest, big empty spaces and thin walls! I thought you still sounded good though. although I thought Jamie sounded decent to be honest, I know it sounds different being on stage (6 foot in front of the audience , but I thought be sounded right on. His voice definitely suits the We Are Scientists covers. Were you playing your five string that night? I didn't get a good gawp at the instruments unfortunately, although I saw some nice guitar pedals. |
Nay unfortunately I didn't bother with my 5-string! It's heavier and slightly harder to play mostly and I only needed it for one of our songs that night so i didn't bother! Sloan does love his pedals, it must be said!
Well thanks for your kind words!

Alright mate, your band were ace last night hope you had a good night. Sick dance moves to YMCA as well |
Haha cheers man! Though I must say the acoustics were pretty terrible in there; at the end Paddy came up to me and said "sick distorted bass there, man" and I had been playing clean most of the time...
Ah we have played better but so long as it was enjoyed good good! Though Jamie's singing wasn't great, but then again it never is haha
I hope you appreciate that We Are Your Friends cover was put together specifically for that night!

Got that album in your display picture a couple of weeks ago. It's a great one. | Yeah, it's possibly my favourite greatest hits album. I love Garcia's playing, the smooth tone and relaxed feel just mellows me out instantly.
