The hand of the land pulls me in directions
through the sun reflecting off the river
into my mind
The mud and the water smelling just like history
woven into mystery in a place that feels unkind.
But when I first saw you
rolling down First
I lost my head
and I hit the ground running again
The dusty road and blackflies float into my kitchen
dusted off and itchin' and the river's on my mind
I can't see through the window so I draw you with my finger
just so I can see you and frame you in the sunlight
Telephone it rang today
I didn't pick up but I got to say
it sounded pretty grim
The things I thought I lost
the people who matter came to mind
it was a long list
Telephone it rang today
was nothing new but I gotta say
the conversation it dragged the thoughts
of yesterday
across the rocks of now
dirt under nails frustration
CHORUS:
This life a flicker of what is so fleeting
walking the path
stepping off where it's beaten
Show me your eyes shake my hand
take the call you gonna get that?
I'm turning off the telephone
make believe that no one's home
Telephone it rang today
the voice it came from the olden days
reminiscent of times I thought I lost
because isn't that the way
time and life and telephones
have long lines
Telephone it rang today
the voice is a smile so near
is that you I hear?
If it were up to me I'd never leave
but the time has come to get some relief
It's been a joy spinning around and around
in this stolen office spinning dreams
Time comes when a cowboy
must ride to the sunset
Hang up his spurs stop spinning his guns then
red-faced and burned out he's stepping aside
to the side square-dancing with reality
but it's just another day in the shade
it's raining fire but this umbrella is fine
I got it made it here in the shade
So here's to you on this trail I've blazed
you think it's rough but baby
you'll be amazed
I just picked up where my daddy got off
he fell off
he fell off before the gallow was raised
I've been playing guitar for years and years and years, in and out of bands (amiably) and need to get "out there." I am a firm believer in the online music community and the opportunity it presents to all of us to share and learn.
Right now I'm living pretty remote but I have a good support system in the group of guys I jam with. Most of the stuff you hear here is written and recorded by me. In case it starts to sound like I'm repeating myself that would be the reason. Anyway, UG seems like the kinda place to find like-minded individuals to further shoot the shit and get some feedback...enjoy.
