Well we took my 11 year old calico cat Patches to the vet on Wednesday. She had been losing a lot of weight. Apparently over the past year she'd dropped from 7 pounds 1 ounce to 5 pounds 8 ounces, most of which seemed to happen just in the past few weeks. The vet recommended they do blood tests which my parents seemed reluctant to do at first due to the cost. They did, and the results came back that she has a bladder infection and kidney failure.

She's been at the vet for the past two nights on IV's to aid the kidneys and they've been treating her with antibiotics. The tests so far have been positive. Her kidney functions are increasing and she's eating more and more. When I heard about the kidney test I almost threw up. Up to 2 is normal, 8 is dying and 10 is dead. She tested at 5. The first night it dropped to 4 and last night it went down to 3. They decided to keep her another night to see if they could keep it dropping down into normal range.

The first day she was so dehydrated, they couldn't get a needle into any vein to start giving her IV's.

They said that if the bladder infection had caused the kidney failure that she could recover to 100%. If the kidneys had failed due to something else, though, she could recover partially but be on the decline for the rest of her life.

All this put into perspective how close I had been and could be to losing my baby
