I am not a hater. So do not accuse me of hating shredding - there are good shredders. When I listen to music, however, I like to hear emotion expressed through guitar. That is what the guitar is for. This is how most anti-shredding arguments would start. However, I would like to point out that there are shredders who can play with more emotion than some of the most incredible guitarists. While there are ultra-fast zombie sounding, technically proficient but creatively guitarists (I would include Yngwie Malmsteem as the most notable in this category), there are just as many incredible shredders out there. Before you discount the genre, listen to one Steve Vai song. I recommend his famous For the Love of God, or perhaps The Audience Is Listening. Try out Joe Satriani. Additionally, there are shredders in genres besides metal. My favorite is Nels Cline (a jazz guitarist) of Wilco (though he sadly only shreds live, so you'll have to buy tickets). The people who would insinuate that these incredible artists play without emotion are simply trying to make up for their own shortcomings by criticizing guitarists with more technical proficiency, so guys, don't be like that. Don't be a hater.
