When the first Guitar Hero video game came out, I would have never even thought of actually playing a real guitar. I played piano and hated it, so I wasn't really interested in playing another instrument. But I was really into video games at the time and went out and bought Guitar Hero II when I had saved up enough money to buy it. I wasn't into listening to much music and most of the songs from the game I had never listened to before. Once I got good enough to beat the game on expert, Guitar Hero III was hitting the shelves. I bought it the first day it came out and quickly beat the whole game. Such songs as 'Raining Blood', 'Mississippi Queen', and 'The Metal' really kind of made me want to play them on an actual guitar. After saving my money up, I went out and bought a Yamaha Pacifica and started taking guitar lessons. I loved playing guitar and soon after I started, I was playing actual guitar more than Guitar Hero. After a year of playing, my parents asked me if I wanted a better guitar and I, of course, said 'yes'. Then they said that if I quit playing video games, they'd buy me any guitar under $1,000. I agreed of course and sold all my video games and then I went around town looking for a good deal a guitar. I ended up with a black Ibanez RGT6EXFX and it's the same guitar I use now. So what I'm trying to say is: Before you start bashing Guitar Hero because you think it's the gayest thing ever and that people who play it should learn how to actually play guitar, just know that Guitar Hero is actually what got me starting to play guitar and now it's one of the few things that I enjoy doing.
thats actually what happened with me lol, cept i wasn't even playing on expert yet, it was only medium, but still, changed what kind of music i listen to and everything
I started learning the real guitar not too long before the first Guitar Hero came out. I was still heavy in to videogames at the time. So I started to learn simultaneously.
But yeah, I've heard many stories about people who picked up real guitar due to Guitar Hero. A few of my friends actually did that.
I wish they had a video game that uses an actual guitar in someway, then it wouldn't be such a waste of learning a skill. I agree that the game brings in more guitar players, A VERY GOOD THING! I would love to hear some of your music.
Guitar Hero is also paying a lot of "OLDER" musicians rent right now. Also all the kids turned onto real good music they would have never heard before, or would have thought the songs suck 'cause their parents listen to them.

I believe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_Rising is sort of what you're looking for. And although I won't 'need' it, like I might have done in the past, I'll probably buy it, just as I keep buying the Guitar Hero/Rock Band games.
I don't really care what others think of them, they're pretty cool for single-player, and absolutely genius when you have three friends with you.
i dont play guitar hero. but why would i bash it? its a fun game and as long as it's kept as such (not treated as "virtual guitar playing/teaching") there's no reason to dislike it.
I think that anything that gets people to pick up an instrument is a good thing, but the people that play GH hardcore and brag about it should be shot in the back of the neck.
If it makes you want to play an instrument, then awesome! Not hatin on Guitar Hero here but Guitar Hero and Rock Band have made several good songs annoying. I can no longer listen to Enter Sandman. It is just too over-played.
Guitar Hero is a lot of fun, though!
I was playing guitar with my friends at school in the hallways and I was shreddin it up, but then these little grade 4 craps start buggin me with such questions as: Can you play Enter Sandman, Through The Fire And The Flames, Raining Blood, One, Battery and pretty much every Guitar Hero and Rock Band song you can think of! Thats where it goes too far (for me, anyways). Learn some new songs! Jesus! But as I have said before, it is fun when you are playing with friends.
personaly, i, like a 12 year old kid, think that without gh, i would never be able to play like i do now, i didnt knew about how good is the old-rock music till i heard the playlist of gh3 and considering that i played guitar like 1 or 2 years before that, i think that when i really started to understand guitar was when i heard the real rock!!!
i can play "one" (in real guitar) without failng xP

That is how i picked up my guitar..... and i agree with TheWannabe and shaniac 13, if you brag about your guitar hero skills..... please pick up a real instrument and do the same...... which you can't, because your playing video games
pretty much same thing happened to me but also my friend was playing guitar and guitar hero and he was like guitar hero sucks pick up a real guitar so I did the funny thing is now that metallica is out he loves it as well
OMFG i love playing guitar hero setups in game stores.
Some guys came in and laughed at me cos i sucked, i said "Whatever, im gunna go back to playing my REAL GUITAR"
which made them laugh more and say i couldnt play and that they are in a band and shit. i felt bad, until i walked into the Guitar store across the street to hear him testing out an epiphone LP, playing some crappy powerchord song by greenday or something. so i walked over all cool and go "wow, you guys are good, can i have a go?"
they were like "hey its you" and said comeone play something.
I proceeded to play Cannon Rock.
they went red in the face, and i got a good laugh.
(canonrock is cool, not hard, but cool, and it was alot better then thier crap so dont flame the song)
nice dude, all my friends laugh at me when i'm not as good as them at guitar hero (I play hard on every instrument) and they have no social lives, girlfriends or play any instruments so i still feel good about myself.....
Great post. Guitar Hero is giving today's kids and teenagers a chance to hear rock music when their lives are dominated with pop and rap music. Guitar Hero inspired me to play as well. Hopefully it will be a catalyst that will bring rock back on top.
I have a similiar story bro. I used to play piano, quit because I hated it, and didn't listen to much music. I didn't listen to music because my mom and sister liked really gay modern pop crap, and my dad never really introduced me to music. I didn't realize how extensive his Clapton and Zeppelin collections were....
Well anyway 2 years ago after we got our wii, I got GH3 and enjoyed it. My dad also was keeping a Fender Stratocaster that he never got around to playing. I asked him if I could try it, so I began playing it. We didn't even have an amp, but then we bought one and ever since I've been playing. Of course my musical taste has changed but GH can open up your mind to music. However you gotta make sure it doesn't control. I don't listen to the GH music anymore really, I find what I like.
